Full-Bauer Matthew Knies Inches Closer

But for equipment enthusiasts, there’s an equally intriguing storyline unfolding off it. The young forward’s gradual transition from CCM to Bauer gear has become something of a long-running subplot, one that continues to develop piece by piece.
While the pace has been slow, almost deliberately so, the latest developments suggest that a full switch to Bauer is not just likely, but inevitable.
At this point, it almost feels like déjà vu. Each new sighting of Bauer equipment on Knies sparks fresh discussion, renewed speculation, and one overarching question. That being, when will the transition be complete?
The answer appears to be “soon,” though perhaps not as soon as some gear watchers initially expected.
Knies’ journey toward Bauer began quietly in the summer of 2024. During informal offseason skates, he was first spotted testing Bauer skates. This was a move that, at the time, raised eyebrows but didn’t necessarily confirm anything.
Players experiment with gear all the time, especially in low-stakes environments. But as September rolled around and Knies took to the ice in preseason action wearing those same Bauer skates, the conversation shifted.
This wasn’t just experimentation anymore; it was the beginning of a change.
From there, the transition gained momentum. Fast forward to this past December, and Knies had introduced Bauer sticks into his in-game setup. This following a handful of appearances in team practices.
For many equipment enthusiasts, that was the tipping point. Sticks are often one of the more personal and performance-driven pieces of gear, and once a player commits to a brand in games, it usually signals a deeper relationship forming behind the scenes. Since then, Bauer sticks have remained a constant in Knies’ arsenal.
Still, the process didn’t accelerate as quickly as some might have predicted. Instead, it continued at what can only be described as a measured, almost methodical pace. That’s part of what has made this transition so fascinating and, at times, a bit humorous for gear watchers.
In an era where many players make sweeping equipment changes more quickly, Knies has taken the scenic route.
The latest chapter came just days ago in a game against the Carolina Hurricanes, when Knies debuted a pair of Bauer Vapor HyperLite gloves. Unlike previous sightings that left room for speculation, these gloves removed any doubt. Featuring his name stitched on the cuffs, they were clearly his.
They were not borrowed gear from a teammate, that could signal a temporary trial. This was another deliberate step forward.
With gloves now added to the mix, the remaining pieces of the puzzle are becoming increasingly obvious. Knies has yet to fully transition to a Bauer helmet, visor, and pants, but it would be surprising if those changes aren’t already in motion.
Whether they arrive later this season, during the summer, or at the start of the 2026–27 preseason remains to be seen. But all signs point in one direction.
What makes this transition particularly noteworthy is the broader context. Knies, an Arizona native, is following a path already established by his teammate Auston Matthews. Another Arizona-born star and prominent Bauer ambassador.
The idea of two high-profile players in Toronto, widely considered the hockey capital of the world, representing Bauer carries significant weight for the brand. It’s not just about individual endorsements; it’s about visibility on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
For Bauer, landing Knies as a full-time ambassador would be a clear win. His profile continues to grow, and his presence in Toronto amplifies that exposure. For fans and equipment enthusiasts, meanwhile, the appeal lies in watching the process unfold in real time. Every new piece of gear tells part of the story.
At this stage, it would be more shocking if Knies didn’t complete the switch in the coming months than if he did. The foundation is already in place with skates, sticks, and now gloves. The remaining changes feel less like a question of “if” and more like “when.”
However long it takes, the slow burn of Matthew Knies’ transition to Bauer has kept the gear world watching closely. When the final pieces do fall into place, it won’t just mark the end of a process, it’ll confirm what many have believed for quite some time.
